Expert Guide: How to Handle Head Lice Outbreaks in Your School or Community
What Are Lice, and Why Do They Spread So Quickly?
Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are wingless insects that live on the human scalp and feed on blood. They lay eggs (called nits) near the base of hair shafts, typically around the nape of the neck and behind the ears. While lice don’t carry disease, their bites cause itching, irritation, and discomfort — not to mention social stigma and missed school days.
Lice spread through direct head-to-head contact and — less commonly — by sharing hats, brushes, headphones, or pillows. Children are particularly susceptible due to their frequent and close interactions.
Signs of a Lice Infestation
Early detection prevents wider outbreaks. Here’s what to look for:
- Persistent scalp itching
- A crawling sensation on the scalp
- Small red bumps on the neck or scalp from scratching
- Nits (white, oval lice eggs) tightly attached to the hair shaft
How to Check for Head Lice
- Use a fine-toothed lice comb on damp, detangled hair.
- Focus on the nape of the neck and behind the ears — lice prefer these warm spots.
- Wipe the comb on a paper towel after each stroke and look for lice or nits.
Checking weekly during high-risk periods (back to school, summer camps) is one of the best preventative strategies.
Safe, Effective Treatment Options with Schooltime®
When lice are confirmed, don’t panic — and definitely don’t reach for harsh chemicals. Schooltime® offers a clinically tested, pesticide-free shampoo that’s gentle on kids and tough on lice.
Step 1: Start with the Right Lice Shampoo
Schooltime® Head Lice Shampoo is safe for daily use, made with plant-based ingredients, and proven to eliminate lice without the harsh effects of permethrin or pyrethrins.
Step 2: Comb Out the Nits
Even the best shampoo can’t loosen every nit. That’s why we recommend using the Schooltime® Lice Comb after treatment to thoroughly remove eggs and prevent reinfestation.
Step 3: Sanitize the Environment
- Wash clothing, bedding, and hats in hot water and dry on high heat.
- Vacuum upholstery and car seats.
- For items that can’t be washed, seal in a plastic bag for 10–14 days.

The oldest known sentence written in the first alphabet was discovered on an ancient ivory comb, dated to about 3,700 years ago.
This research focused on a museum collection of double-sided combs made from common reeds. These combs were used by cultural groups that flourished in river valleys in the Atacama Desert between about C.E. 500 and 1500. Viewing the combs at 10 times normal size revealed their true purpose: Many still bore traces of the lice and nits they had extracted from someone’s tresses [42].
